Bipolar Disorder is defined as a mental disorder that cause's unusual shifts of moods and lifestyle. These moods will shift from highs or elated feelings of euphoria or aggression to bouts of lows such as major depression. This disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance within ones brain and can be to some degree treated but symptoms still occur on a daily basis. These symptoms may start as early as pre-teens but may not be properly diagnosed until well into ones twenty's or thirties. One may also be termed a rapid cycler as having a bout of depression for 1-2 days times and then swinging to the more dangerous bout of mania.
This disorder will affect ones life to the degree of not being able to function in any normal life or working environment. Sudden loss of temper when on a high swing will cause some to lose jobs or disrupt the workplace. Low self esteem is also associated with this disorder and the work place environment only adds to this disability when others criticize one's work.
When one is in a depressive state they are not able to function or do daily activities such as house hold work or personal care. Most often these days are spent in bed sleeping and no reason or care is rationalized by the depressed person. Depression can occur to the severity that suicide may occur.
Treatment is by use of Seratonin Re-uptake Inhibitors to replace the Seratonin not being produced in the quantities or amounts needed to maintain normal brain activity.
This disorder has a terrible stigmatized feeling from the general public that are not educated to the disorder. Those afflicted with it are termed as "going postal" when mad or in the manic phase.
