CMO - Lion's Jaw - metacam treatment - success
Sent to General Experts July 25 11:33 PM

Thanks to Nancy Holmes and another source, it has been determined that our 11-week old Bullmastiff puppy has Lion's Jaw (CMO). After much indecision, he has been placed on metacam (1 shot and liquid dose - 1 per day). It has transformed him!! He seems to be perfectly normal. We have 2 weeks supply, and then what? I'm wondering if we should stay on it for 3 - 6 months until he outgrows this. And how are we to know when to do what? I'm very afraid to take him off metacam as he was a very painful zombie. What should our vet do?

There's an article that sheds some light on a CMO case of a 6 month old female bullmastiff. The case was treated in Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. In the article the vets treated the bullmastiff with 1 shot/day for the first 2 weeks, 1 shot every other day for the 3'rd week and then whenever needed. The owner said the dog didn't have any pain for the next month.

Here's the link to the article:

Here's the excerpt from the article:

"Treatment consisted of pain management to relieve the discomfort when eating. Initially, metacam (Meloxicam; Boerhinger Ingelheim, Burlington, Ontario), 0.1mg/kg BW, PO, q24h, was administered for 14 d. The frequency of dosing was then dropped to q48h for 7 d, and then as needed. On a 3-month follow-up, the owner indicated that the dog had not received metacam for about 1 mo and seemed to be pain free. There did not appear to be any changes in the size of the mandibular swellings at that time."

Hope this helps.
