Stinky Towels

My bath towels are kind of stinky. I'm not sure if it is because I forgot a load of laundry in the washer, didn't immediately add them to the dryer or because of another reason. I have tried adding fabric softener and tried soaking in baking soda. They are good bath towels and I hate to throw them away. Help!
