Dear Stevian,

This could have originated in a couple of places, most likely in Europe unless it is a knockoff.

There are ancient chess pieces similar to these that originated in Greece and Italy centuries ago.

Chess, in the middle ages, was thought to be a metaphor for sexuality, the power of females (NOTE the movements of the queen), and seduction.

The fact that it is resin and not marble or other stone, indicates it is a modern piece, as you said, about 30 years old.

To a collector of chess boards and pieces, or at auction for people collecting that time period, the complete set would fetch a broad range of 250 to 500 dollars.

I would like to give you a better estimate of the pieces.

If you can find a marking on the bottom and inside of any of the boxes, boards, or pieces, it would be helpful in determining a more exacting value. I am looking for: location and maker, primarily. If there is a foreign language on the pieces, that would also be helpful in narrowing this down. I this can be determined to be an original piece of a known manufacturer or artist, it could bring much more.

Yes. Sothebies will send me a reply indicating that my original estimate is approximately correct, or requesting to see the whole set if they think it might be worth as much as the minimum amount of an item they handle.

Dear Stevenson,

I just received my appraisal. They estimated this slightly lower than my estimate. They appraised it between 100 to 250 dollars without the chess board, To an interested buyer.

You need to know that venue is important. Ebay shoppers for example, want something for nothing most of the time.

For example: I had fully sublimated high end bike team shirts made. The whole sale cost was 65 dollars per shirt. These same shirts would go for 100 to 180 dollars in a bike shop. However, I could not get a single buyer to pay more than 35 dollars for the shirt. The ebay expenses for listing exceeded the cost of the one shirt I sold.

Ebay is good from some things, but you may not get what the pieces are worth on Ebay.

You should try to sell those at an antique or art auction. You might also clean them up without damaging them, and put them on consignment in an antique or similar store.
