Cheque guarantee service

I have recently opened a bank account with HSBC. I received my cash card, chequebook and the rest of the caboodle but as it is my first account with HSBC I spoke to a customer services person at my branch to resolve some queries. Questions began to rise in my mind when the gentleman came to the topic of the cheque guarantee services offered by HSBC. The gentleman in question claimed that my guarantee card, for use when cashing and paying by cheque, needn't be used or produced for viewing by the payee when the ammount of the cheque exceeded the guaranteed ammount on the card.

Is this correct?

As I say, this is my first current account with HSBC but I have had accounts with other banks in the past. This claim is alien to me. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou in advance.
