Question

My puppy barked and whined all night last night. We got him Friday from a friend who adopted him. He's 11wks old. We are working on house breaking him. At night we contain him in our bathroom with child gates. The past nights he managed to escape. so we bought an additional gate and it contained him. However, he barked and whines all night. I need advise bad.

Answer

My pup did that when I got him, he wants to be warm and comforted. Place a cardboard box sideways covered in a blanket, so he can feel safe and warm. Then put newspapers where you want him to go poddy at night and place the food in by his little cubby area. Put another soft blanket down and make it cozy. Then put in a soft bear or stuffed animal about his size by his bed area. For the first 2 nights, play with him for 15-30 mins before bedtime, give a small chewy and place him in the bathroom. The chewy will take his mind off you, he wont be as hyper cause you just played, and will forget about whining while he's snuggling with his new buddy. You could use a crate if you plan to keep him in there when doing errands, but I let mine run around and the closet is his room to hang out in and hide his bones, toys, my socks, and bits of food he steals. I do go through it once a week so I dont have a huge pile of his treasures (my stuff mostly mixed with rawhide bits) and I can switch his toys around. If you live in a cold area you can even put in a electric blanket on low with a towel on it, but baby blankets are cheaper and cozy.
