Question

Homerun or something else?!

Sent to General Experts June 29, 2006 2:01 p.m.

Little League baseball: The field fence has a yellow marking across the top of the fence. (Similar to the yellow painted line at some major league ball parks) The player hits the ball and it hits the yellow line but bounces back on the field. Is it a home run? (In the majors, if the ball hits the yellow line or the yellow foul pole and bounces back onto the field it is a home run. Is the rule the same in Little Leaue? The umpire at the game where this occurred called it a homerun but a disgruntled coach said he blew the call. Who is right? Thanks!!

REPLIED Check Mark

Hello,

Welcome to Just Answer. After doing some research it appears that the coach was correct. The rule book in section 6.09d states,

Quote:
"The batter becomes a runner when: a fair fly ball passes over a fence or into the stands at a distance from home base of 165 feet (Junior/Senior/Big League Baseball - 250 feet) or more. Such hit entitles the batter to a home run when all bases have been legally touched. A fair fly ball that passes out of the playing field at a point less than 165 feet (Junior/Senior/Big League Baseball - 250 feet) from home base shall entitle the batter to advance to second base only."

Thank You,

Michael D.

Hi, Thanks for your answer. However, under the facts I presented, the ball travelled over 165 feet and hit the top of the fence (and the marking yellow line) at 180 feet. It then bounced up and then back into the field. Is this a homerun under the rule? Thanks for the quick reply!

It then bounced up and then back into the field. That is to say, it never left the playing field; it is a bit like a ball hitting the foul pole and falling back into the field or a ball hitting the yellow line or above in a big league game. In both instances, it is ruled a homerun. Is this a homerun under the little league rule? Thanks for the quick reply!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hello,

I checked with another expert that is a little league coach. He said that if the ball hits the yellow bar that is on top of the fence and bounces back into the field then it should be ruled a home run. If the ball hits the middle of the fence below the yellow bar then it should be ruled as a double.

Thank You,

Michael D.
