Reply to John Baker's Post: My a/c is central unit. It stopped running 1 day ago and only then i finally replaced the dirty filter.(too late) I suspected it contributed to that why the unit failed to function. But now the unit won't come on. I even turned the on/off switch in the circuit breaker. I'm just seeking advice on a non-costly way, but i know eventually i need to have a qualified technician to check my a/c unit. Thanks.

Reply to John Baker's Post: When you say it does not come on what exactly do you mean? Ans:My a/c won't kick in.

Does it blow any air at all? Ans:Nothing at all.

Does the fan on the out side unit operate? Ans: It's not turn on.

Does the compressor on the outside make any type of noise when the air conditioner is suppose to be running? Ans: the thermostat isn't functioning to make this unit comes on

Make of the unit and approximate age of it?
Ans: RHEEM A/C Model: RPKA-025JAZ Year:2000

From the information you provided me, I believe the problem you are experiencing is power related.

I say that for several reasons.

If the unit was blowing air inside and the outside unit was not working, I would suspect the problem to be problems with the outside unit.

If the outside unit was working and the inside was not blowing cold air, just room temperature air, I would suspect problems with the outside unit.

With none of you air conditioner working at all, there are most likely 2 causes.

The first would be the wall thermostat.

If it is not supplying the information needed by the central air, the results would be as you have described.

By chance does you central air have a off switch, either near the inside unit, or on the thermostat?

If so make sure it is in the on position.

The next thing I would suspect is the actual power going to the central air conditioner.

Even though you tried even turned the on/off switch in the circuit breaker, if the circuit breaker went bad, this would not have helped.

There could be many reasons the air conditioner is not getting power, but the most often experienced problem is the breaker going bad.

If I were you, I would try to find someone that could check your thermostat and the power line going to your furnace.

This is a very quick and easy process for someone with basic electrical knowledge and the tools necessary.

After this is done I am positive they will either find both working OK or one or the other not.

If the Air is not getting power, I would suggest an electrician fix the problem.

If the thermostat is found non operational, have it replaced.

I don't believe your not cleaning the filter, would have had anything to do with the problem you are having now.

Of course all these suggestions are made relying on experiences of Air Conditioner repair. There can always be exceptions.

No one can be 100% positive without actually seeing your Air conditioner and it's problems.

Sometime the simplest thing can cause the problem.

I hope this helps making your decisions, and helps get your air conditioner fixed swiftly.
