In 1938, The Italian dictator Benito Mussolini sent a telegram to his team saying "Victory or death!". The champoinship was played in France as Europe readied for war. Italy won, as they had the year before, making them one of the all-time great national teams. Because of the war, the World Cup was not played again for 12 years.
