Answer

Not necessarily. This will depend on the genetic makeup of both parents.

Answer

Actually my father has a cleft chin and none of us four kids have one. But I try not to let my personal experience get in the way of my professional work! So - I will do some more research, but I am curious about why this is so important to you.

Accepted Answer

That is correct that it is a recessive gene. That means that you must have 2 recessive genes for the chin cleft to show. So the father has two recessive genes and always passes one to each of his offspring. Now Mom comes in to the picture - she has a cleft chin as well, so she has 2 recessive genes and passes one on to each of her offspring - in that case, the children will all have cleft chins. Let's bring in a different Mom. This one doesn't have a cleft chin, but she has one recessive trait. This means she can give each child a recessive or a dominant gene (the dominant gene is for no cleft). So whenever they have a child, there is always a 50% chance of the child having a cleft and a 50% chance of the child having a trait for it, but no visible cleft.
