Question

Miss Kitty, 6 years, got out early Sunday evening (85-95 degrees). She returned 3 p.m. on Monday, exhausted & panting very hard--daytime heat is 110. She collapsed for a bit then drank lots of water, slept several hours, then ate some food. Concern: the pads on her back feet and one front paw are very dark and one tiny pad on the other front paw is the same. Could they be burned? Possible from walking/running on hot street (tar?) She licks her one front paw. Her hair is also coming out in tuffs. She slept good last night--just very quiet this morning. What should be done about her pads? Hair? Thank you. XXXXXX@XXX.XXX

Cats are very sensitive to heat, but will continue to push the envelope when otherwise occupied. The immediate dangers related to heat stroke and exhaustion seem to have resolved, though she will continue to be vunerable to repeat episodes of heat exposure until she recovers fully. Dehydration, and exposure to the heat and elements are likely causes for pad discoloration, and irritation. You can use mineral oil to clean and moisturize pads. Excessive shedding, even in clumps may be seen in cases of heat exposure and dehydration as well. A cool bath, with moisturizing shampoo, and a gentle brushing may help, and give you the opportunity to check for Fleas, ticks, lice, fly larvae and mites, scaling, or other sources of concern. (these will require vet evaluation) Keep her indoors, in a cool enviornment, with access to plenty of fresh water. You may add a Vitamin supplement if she does not currently take one.

Call the Vet if skin fails to improve, she has a lack of appetite, persistent vomiting, diarrhea, red, watery eyes, nasal discharge, is straining to urinate, has bloody urine, or frequent urination, or for any signs of pain.
