Question

My dog became deaf bilaterally after being given gentamycin for an ear infection. What is the likelihood it will be permanent and are there any treatments to improve that chance or any hearing devices for dogs?

Gentamycin can cause TEMPORARY deafness in dogs. What happens is that the little hair cells in the ear swell up and so the nerves can't send sound messages to the brain. After a period of withdrawl of the gentamycin, the hair cells will return to their normal size and will start firing off sound messages again. Give it two weeks at least. Stop any gentamycin in the ear.dr4pets38886.8983056366

I just want a second opinion; I like the first one very much. Thanks!

Everything I've read indicates that almost all cases of gentamycin deafness are temporary. Most resolve within 2-4 weeks. (Of course that is not a guarantee!)

I've also read that giving antioxidants may help restore hearing faster. It certainly can't hurt.

Here is one brand of antioxidants that I like:

Hope your pooch is hearing again soon!

Hi and thanks for your interest in this important subject.

The information in the two previous answers is correct.

Gentamicin is known to cause temporary hearing loss in some dogs. Unfortunately, it is one of the best medications known to eliminate bacterial growth in the ears so it has not been replaced as a standard medication to use. Any pet experiencing an adverse drug effect should not be exposed to that medication again in future:

If it has been more than three weeks since the medication was stopped, you may need to consider asking your regular vet for a referral to a Veterinary Neurologist to have a complete analysis of your pet's hearing loss.

***But first, I would have your regular vet re-examine these ears. Wax build up can interfere with the normalizing process. Your vet can look all the way down the canal to the ear drum and tell you if it is healthy, or if the ear drum has a tear in it.***

Here is a link that has a lot of information about hearing loss in dogs and some ideas about how to help at home:

If this was caused by the medication, your patience and gentle care are the best friends your dog has at this time!
