How to deal with smelly garbage disposal?

Question from a fellow ExpertAsk expert... :)

I'm wondering what can be done about a smelly garbage
disposal. It's fairly new (I live in a loft building completed less
than a year ago), and I think some vegetable matter got down
there and has rotted. I've tried washing it out but the smell
comes back.

Any ideas? Thank you very much for your time, and Ill be sure
to accept answers as they come my way..
