This is one of the most famous cases in the USA. In 1987 Joel Steinberg beat his adopted little girl Lisa Steinberg to death. Lisa's mother had paid Steinberg 500.00 (he was an attorney) to find Lisa a home. He took her and the money. His life in girlfriend/wife, Hedda Nussbaum, watched for years while Joel beat her and Lisa and never came forward to report this. At her trial it was the first time the "abusive wife syndrome" was introduced. Steinberg was paroled this year. The City was sued by the Estate of Lisa and paid over 900K restitutions for the failure of social services to protect. The schools and neighbors had reported the little girls abuse, but no one intervened because Mr.Steinberg was an attorney. I remember this like it was yesterday because I live 35 minutes from NYC. The website above will give you all the details you asked for.

I was a nurse down in Cornwall when this case hit the news. It was one of the most brutal child abuse cases in UK history.

The child name was Anna Climbié. She died of hypothermia in February, 1999. Her body after death showed 128 marks of violence, inflicted with leather belts, metal coat hangers, a bicycle chain, and a hammer. She was burned with cigarettes and scalded with hot water. Her fingers were cut with razors. For six months, she had been made to sleep in a black plastic garbage bag (in place of clothes) in a bathtub: sometimes she had been left in cold water, bound hand and foot, for 24 hours. She was emaciated to the point of starvation; her legs were so rigidly flexed that when she was admitted to the hospital the day before her death, they could not be straightened.

It was not as if there had been no warnings of Anna's terrible fate. She was admitted to the hospital twice during the months before she died; doctors alerted the social service authorities to the abuse she was suffering at least six times; and the police also were alerted more than once. No one did anything whatsoever.
