Question
I have an approximately nine year old silky terrier who was rescued from a puppy mill several years ago. He has always had problems with thunderstorms (shaking, digging, pacing in circles), but he is currently exhibiting these behaviors without any clear source for his anxiety. I was on vacation for one week and he boarded at the home of a woman who takes in dogs. She has had him at her home before and the only problem has occurred during thunderstorms. I am concerned about his "panic attacks" and wonder if there is a good anxiolytic for dogs that I can start to give him.

Hi XXXXXXXX,
T'storms fears are really hard to eliminate, and if you have other dogs that seem unphased by it, just being around a scaredy dog seems rub off. Soon you have all sorts of dogs, anxious at the first rumblings.
There are no tranquilizers that remove this concern, they don't work on the same centers on the brain. A sedative might be more to the point.
But the problem with most of these 'need it right now' responses is that the problem has started before you recognize it's on the way, and this, coupled with the latency of the drug's action, gets help there too little, too late. (You need a direct line to the Weather Channel, and there may be a lot of false alarms?)
There may be other medications, but they don't lend themselves to working on short notice. If you want to go long term, a more psychotropic medication may work. There are some mental/psychological conditions in dogs that create aberrant behaviors. Speak to your vet about some, the t'storms may just be triggers to this epileptic-like behavior.
