Question

What is likey to happen if you stop giving an 8 to 10ish year old Dalmatian his daily dose of phenobarbitol and at the same time you stop giving him his medication ,you put on a 'No Bark' collar? He was prescribed this medication appoximately 4 to 5 years ago after a bout of encephalitis.

Answer

Hi kinke,

You are liable to set off abnormal brain activity, like whatever he started on the meds for in the first place, plus anything else that may be lurking. Pheno suppresses the thresholds, and sudden removal is like turning all the monkies loose at once.

Do it gradually, over a week or 10 days, reducing a little each day.

Whether or not the shock collar will have anything to do with other reactions; consider that it will definitely stimulate the whole dog. I have question about the efficacy of shock collars as a training aid, especially for barking. Suppose he 'yipes' every time he gets a shock after he barks? Is this a vicious cycle in the making?

Fits of barking, if this is what you are aiming at, can also be a type of epileptic partial seizural activity. He may just need his meds changed, but that is for his vet to decide.

Hope this helps him.
