Question

I adopted my cat, Tigre, female. about 12 years ago, didn't know how old she was then. She was quiet and didn't socialize much until about 3 years ago (we now have 3 other female cats, 2 of which were adopted a year after Tigre, the third was a stray we brought in a year ago, had her fixed). End of last year, she started to lick her back by her tail until she was almost bald. She also started drinking out of the toilet a few months back. Always had a pretty big appetite for dry and wet food treats (about a tsp twice a day). Suddenly she started following me around, "yelling" at me and won't eat but a few tsps a day and won't drink much water or tea (she also started drinking tea a few months ago). Her eyes don't look right, kind of sad like she's trying to tell me something. I have tried different kinds of wet food and even baby food to get her to eat more, I pet her, brush her and talk to her. She still won't eat much and looks sad. I don't have alot of money to take her to the vet and have some tests run, I know they're expensive. Please help, I'm afraid of losing my oldest daughter.

Has she been drinking tea with caffene?

Does the baby food have any onion or garlic in it?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Thank you for your quick reply. However, I have just learned that Tigre suffers from kidney failure and short of spending thousands of dollars I understand there is not much that can be done....

Do you have any test results you could post - like BUN Creatnine, etc?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: I only had the vet give Tigre fluid under the skin and do some blood work. I don't have the info in writing but was told she had extremely high phosphorous (sp?), globulin levels and high nitrogen levels. She said more, but I didn't catch the rest. The vet said she was 90% sure of kidney failure, but there was no urinalysis done due to cost. She said all the symptoms Tigre showed (weight loss, no balance, "crying", dehydration, no appetite, heart murmer) could all be caused by kidney failure.

If Tigre has Kidney issues there are things you cando to prolongh her life. Your vet can show you have to administer subQ fluids at home. This is not hard and may people (including myself) do his for their cats. There are also some natural remedies that will enhance kidney function.A few drops of fish oil in her food - sprinkle dandelion and parsley and wheat grass in her food as well.Just finely choped small amounts.you can get these in a health food store.

Even though Tigre is an older cat, she still has a chance at a few good years with the right treatment.Feeding small amounts f wet food every two hours wil keep nnutrition constantly in her system withch will help as well.

Please keep in touch and let e know how Tigre is doing. If you have any more questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
