Question

I have brown vaginal discharge instead of my regular period and this has been happening for about 2-3 months now. Home pregnancy tests and blood pregnancy tests have indicated not pregnant (we aren't trying to get pregnant either) and thyroid tests came back normal. What in the world could be causing this?

Answer

If the discharge does not look like old blood to you, or has a foul odor or is associated with itching/pain, you should make an appointment with the gynecologist for further work up to rule out other possible causes such as an infection .

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: There is no itching, and no foul odor. I continue to have my regular clear vaginal discharge in between "periods", but now have been suffering from naseau for about 3 weeks and just recently (about the last week or so) from diarhea. Do these seem related and if so, are there any other possible explanations for what is causing this? The discharge seems to appear at the time that my period should be taking place, and definitely does have the appearance of old blood. The last time this happened, it had a very thick consistency and even had little black clots in it. (Sorry for the detailed description, but hopefully, it can help in assessing any possible causes.) Thank you so much for your help in this issue.

Answer

Hi, Nausea and diarrhea shows that you had Gastroenteritis. It is not related to brown vaginal discharge. The brown vaginal discharge looks like old blood or denaturated blood and body is trying to get rid of it. Other causes can be hormonal imbalance , medications ,birth control pills etc. also needs to be ruled out. I suggest to you to see a Gynecologist to confirm the diagnosis with an examination.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: Thank you, again, for your help. To clarify, I am not on birth control pills and the medications that I'm on have been told to me by my primary that they don't cause this type of issue. So, could it still be a hormone imbalance even though my thyroid test came back normal?

Accepted Answer

It may be hormonal imbalance . If you were mostly not ovulating during your period past several months, than Estogen hormone dominates over the uterus and thickens the inner lining of the uterus. Thichened lining increse the amount of bleeding during the period. If bleeding is to much the uterus is unable to produce enough anticoagulant until removal all the blood due to period from the cavity of the uterus and some blood may stay inside as a blood clot. When you get your montly period old clotted blood and fresh blood from the period combines and comes out as a brown discharge.

You need to find out your blood progesteron level , if it is low you need to be put on progesterone hormone pill .
