What are prime numbers and how are they derived

I know 17 is a prime number but why is it? What makes this number a prime number

A prime number is a number that cannot be divided by any number except 1 and itself.

Prime numbers are 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23 and so on....

For example, 17 - cannot be divided by 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15, or 16.... just 1 and 17.

8 is not prime. It can be divided by 1,2,4 and 8.
