I got the receipe for the chalupas but I really need someone to tell me how to make them or how to fry them, whatever Taco Bell does to them to make them crisp.

Hi!
Taco Bell Chalupa Shells
2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
1 cup milk
Oil for deep fat frying

To make the chalupa shell, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening and add milk. Shape dough into a long cylinder and divide equally into 6 balls. Pat each ball out into a circle 5-inches in diameter (make the circles thinner in the middle so there will be a depression to hold the toppings).

Fry each disc in hot oil until puffed and golden on both sides (turn once). Drain on absorbent paper towels.

Pile your choice of ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, peppers, and cheese. Accompany, if desired, with salsa, sliced black olives, sour cream, or guacamole.

Makes 6 very large tacos.

I hope this helps you....:)

When are the shells folded in half, like they are at Taco Bells when you get them. They seemed to be deep fried so they stay that way.

That wouldn't work because that's the great part of the "Chalupas" the crispy shells. But thank you anyway.

The easiest way to do this, which I have seen my grandmother & mother do it is:

Put the corn tortilla in the oil, as soon as the tortilla begins to form bubbles, start grabing it with the tongs and folding it. Hold it in for a bit and it will begin to get crisp and will stay in the shape of a taco shell. Just don't fold it all the way, to where you can't stuff the taco/chalupa!

It gets easier with practice, but it works ; )

Relist: I want a different opinion.
Any other ideas would be appreciated. I would really like to know if I can just buy the shells but where?

I am looking to buy "Chalupa" shells, which are very different than any of the other shells they use.
