The reason men walk on the outside of women is because they were protecting their women from spillage of commodes along the raodside whild discarding human wastse in the early France times. Is there any truth to this?

Yes and not only that, to protect them from splashes from carriages and horses. This was also true in England and othr countries. Also, would hold their purses on the side the man walked in order to be protected from pick-pockets and thieves.
