Answer

I have seen them close to the altar, one the sides in alcoves, in the back also in the sanctuary. There is no particular mandate regarding where the font should be placed.

Answer

I could not find a direct answer to your question on the ELCA website. However they do list the following e-mail address for worship-related questions: worship@elca.org

I am sure that they will find the answer for you if you contact them.

My neighbor is the minister in the local Lutheran church. My answer was based on the fact when I asked him, he said there is no official mandate as many of the churches in this area and across the world are historic and the preservation of the building and or remodeling is guided by the city building codes. There is no formal desripyion of where hte baptismal font must be placed. He said hat is first and foremost is the content and understanding of the baptism ceremony and what it implies. He stated that the only religions that have stringent guidelines for how the set-up of the building and contents of the place of worship must be in conjunction with the mandates and laws of the religion is in Judaism and Islamic sects.
