I have a 50 amp a/c amp meter that I want to hook up to my portable generator. It has 2 terminals on the back that have a jumper (shunt?) between them attaching them together. I do not have a wiring diagram for the meter. Could you tell me how to hook it into my generator wiring so it would always read the amp draw? Thank, Denny, Miami, FL.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The meter should be installed in the hot wire of the generator. The hot wire goes from your generator to the power or hook up box. The current will have to pass through the meter for it to read amperage. DO NOT install the hot wire to one side of the meter and the neutral wire to the other side, since this would create a direct short. Directions, disconnect the hot wire from the power outlet of the generator. Now attach this wire from the generator to one side of the meter. Connect a wire from the other side of the meter to where the hot wire was connected to the power outlet of the generator. Make sure any new connections are properly covered to prevent a shock or worse. Make sure the generator is not running when doing this modification.

Okay, I understand (and I will accept), but one more question. The generator is 220/240 volt. Should I install 2 amp meters? (one for each leg)?
Thanks, Denny, Miami, FL
