Question

Our 12yr old minature schnauzer cross ate ham last night ( got it out of the garbage) and today hasn't been able to defecate. He has a very swollen stomach, has urinated and thrownup once after eating grass and seems miserable. What can we do to help him?

Reply to Heather's Post: I don't believe that there were any bones, though since he got into our kitchen garbage pail I can't be sure about what else he might have found - we did have chicken a day or so ago, too, so it is possible.

Answer

Hi, if there is a possiblity he ate a bone this may be why he can't deficate. I would recommend you take him to the vet to get the correct care he needs. Sometimes certain things can get stuck in the intestine which can make it hard to pass them. If proper care is taken there is great chance for recovery. If treatment is not sought their systems will sometimes shut down. Give the vet a call and see what her opinion is so you can get the correct diagnosis and treatment for your dog. Best of luck and any other questions please let me know. Keep me posted on how he is feeling.
