Question

Our cat, approximately 6 years old, is an indoor/outdoor cat. The last Feline Leukemia shot that he had was back in 2003.    We moved to a different location and the Veternnanan checked him for the Fel Leuk, and he tested positive, but she said that if he had had the vacc., that would cause him to test positive. That was a year ago, and the cat seems to be in fine health - but now I'm concerned that he might get it. Can he be vaccinated for it now, even though he tests positive?

Relist: He seems fine, except that he does have Asthma and has to have a Depo Medrol shot every 6 weeks. I really want to know if it would be safe to start the Feline Leukimia inoculation.
He is a large cat, weighs 16 lbs!

Dear friend,
You can with safety give your cat a leukemia shot. However, I would test him again. If he aleady has the virus in his system, a vaccine would be pointless as it is not going to provide any immunity.
Keep in mind that a cat can test positive for this virus and never be sick a day in his life. Also, the vaccine is only about 85% effective so even with it your cat can still contract this disease.
Please let me know if you have any more questions or want to discuss this more. I will be happy to help.
Very sincerely,
Terri
