what affect will a tar tree have on grass growing under it?

i want to what affect a tar tree might have on grass growing under it, like will it kill the grass and why. i would also like to know if possable how to solve this problem. if you can not find out about tar tress then i would like to know if there are any trees that can grow in a Canadian climate that will kill grass growing under and how i can stop this from happening.
