Question

I am 31 years old and fully disabled. My mother has been caring for me for the last 2 1/2 years as SSI has just finally kicked in. Are there any credits or exemptions that she can claim as she had to pay all of my bills from rent, utilities, medical, everything. Also, she had to withdraw money out of one of her CD's to help care for me. Does she need to report that as income?

Answer

If you are permanently and totally disabled - you are qualified child for your mother for tax purposes. She may claim you as a dependent if:

  • You live with your mother for more than half of the year
  • Your mother provides more than half of your support.

Withdrawing money from CD in not an income, however part of that amount is the interest from that CD and will be a taxable income.
