Question

I am a 49 yr old male, 6' 0", weighing 204 lbs. For the last 2 weeks I have been dieting and consistently working out. I don't understand my weight fluctuations. Yesterday morning I weighed 204, last night I weighed 208, this morning I am back to 204. I don't understand how I can show a 4 lbs. gain when I had maybe 1 lbs. of solids and liquids through out the day. What is happening here? I recently bought a fancy new digital scale, it appears to bew working fine. (I started at a weight of 212).

Even though you have a new scale, digital scales are actually the worse for accuracy. Now with that said. People generally do weigh less in the AM vs the PM due to water retention etc. That's why it's always said if you purchase shoes, clothing etc do so in the afternoon. Also if you are working out you can actually start to turn fat into muscle as well, which muscle weighs more. So if you go by your scale.. you need to pick a time and go with that time each day and no other. Generally mornings is a good time to do it, for fluid retention etc. Skip your evening weigh in which will be confusing as it is to you now.

Hope this helps.

I can understand water retention & turning fat into muscle but the math on this question doesn't work out. How can I add 4lbs. when I only take in 1 lbs. It appears that my body is creating weight, can our body do that?

(This is not a one time occurrence, it happens often, usually it is only a couple of lbs. variance.)

I have to agree with Lindie as digital scales can actually be less accurate then a regular scale. And yes you can actually add weight when you are working out and dieting for the first few weeks before you start losing the weight as it turns into muscle. Even though you only took in one pound of food the workout and water retention can easily add three pounds to the body weight. I would not weight yourself except for the morning time and not the evening time as this will give you a better idea of how your weight is coming off. Also since you have only been dieting for a couple of weeks give yourself another week or two and you will start to see better results.
