Question

I have a Volvo 1972 1800 ES that has been in storage for the last ten years. I took it out and changed the fuel lines etc. and got it started without any trouble. However, when I engage the clutch and try to shift the clutch does not work. It worked fine when I put the car in storage. Do you have any advice?
Jim

Reply to Danny's Post: When the clutch is pushed all the way down the car will still not shift into gear. If forced it will engage in gear and take off. Clutch will not disengage the transmission. Jim

Answer

If the clutch pedal feels good then this is what has happened to your car. With the car having set for a long time the clutch disc has rusted to the fly wheel or pressure plate. It will not releases because when you press the clutch normally the pressure plate moves to let the clutch go free, your clutch is sticking to it and moving with it. I have seen this on vehicles before, They may free up but I have had to use a "putty knife" scraper and put it between the fly wheel and the clutch and the pressure plate and the clutch to free them up. Do this while the engine is off. turn the motor a little by hand and go all the way around the clutch disk. The only alternatives are try diving it may free up. or replace the clutch. Hope this helps. Please click accept for me. Thanks
