Today is Shrove Tuesday. In the Christian calendar, it is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

In France, Shrove Tuesday is known as Fat Tuesday or (in French) Mardi Gras. Mardi is French for Tuesday, Gras is French for Fat.
