Question

Hello,
I have an 8 month female Golden Retriever. What age should she come into her first heat? What should the flow and the length on the first heat be? I have an 8 month old female who seems to have come into her first cycle. It seems to have lasted at least nine days now. Is this normal or something of concern?
                                         &nbs p;                   Thank You,

Answer

Normally dogs come into their first heat between 6-12 months of age.
Heat usually lasts about 3 weeks with the first week being a red discharge, the second straw or clear, and the third little discharge at all.
The most fertile time is days 9-14 in most dogs but you need to keep her away from males the whole season as dogs vary in when they will mate.
Hope this helps you!
