does an employer have to give a weeks notice before sacking someone

Answer

Not if they are an 'at will' employee. Most employees are 'at will' these days...which means you can let someone go for no reason at all...and with no notice. If you are letting someone go for a violation of some sort, or a safety issue...you can also fire them immediately. Check your employee handbook...but you should be able to 'fire' on the spot.
