Question

Cost of Living

Sent to General Experts February 09, 2006 3:54 p.m.

Trying to find info for my boss. He wants to know the city with the lowest cost of living in the US or the top three cities with lowest cost.Or compare my city with four other cities in the US that is similar in population to mine. I've looked on US Census Bureau, American Chamber of Commerece and dozens more. They don't give me the info I need. All I get is comparison calculators were you can compare two cities. Well, most of the calcualtors only have a pre-selected list of cities to choose from and my city ( Lake Charles, Louisiana) isn't on them. Got any ideas??

The top three cities with the lowest cost of living are Saginaw Mich, Portsmith Ohio, and Fairbanks Alaska. The cost of living is lowest in Saginaw, Michigan (-14% national average) according to salary.com. Saginaw has a similar population to Lake Charles (61799 v 71757).

http://www.relocationessentials.com/aff/realtyusa/tools/salary/col.aspx allows you to compare by county.

http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html lists Lake Charles. I figured these there:
1. The cost of living is 3.5% lower in Tuscaloosa, Ala (pop. 85171)
2. The cost of living is 12.5% higher in Bellingham, Wash (pop. 71000)
3. The cost of living is about 4% higher in Vancouver, Wash (pop.69000)
4. The cots of living in Wilmington, DE is approx 5.5% higher (pop. 73,000)
