Question

We have had a geko lizard for years and he is very old. His eyes have grown closed and he wont eat. He doesnt have the energy to move. He is suffering. We have cut off his heat light in hopes that it would send him into hibernation so he can die peacefully. We dont want to let him go to die because we want him to die in his own home. We have considered crushing up a sleeping pill and feeding it to him, but we are afraid it will make him worse. Is there anything we can do to keep him from suffering any longer? We will appreciate your help.

Answer

If you are convinced that your gecko is dying, then I would suggest taking him and his enclosure and having him HUMANELY euthanized by a veterinarian.

Changing his environment and giving him an unknown dose of substance that would be toxic to him is only going to create more stress and suffering for him.

It is much more in his best interest to be euthanized properly. He won't feel a thing, he'll just go to sleep and not wake up.
