Question

My daughter had her hair permed on Sunday. It is now ...

My daughter had her hair permed on Sunday. It is now Tuesday evening and she just washed her hair for the first time since the perm. When she combed it out, her hair was straight. Did the perm not take? We sprayed the curl gel in and scrunched it and then let it air dry. Now it looks like there's a slight wave to it and looks "poofy." Does she need to have her hair repermed or is this a styling problem?

PROBLEM: Your perm did not take, or won't take.
WHAT PROBABLY HAPPENED: There are several things can make this happen. Age, some medications, pregnancy, other hormonal activity, and illness. On very rare occasions due to certain chemical hair structures, some people have hair that just plain will not perm well, or at all.

SOLUTION: You can't do much about the age or medication issue except experiment with different types of perm solutions and processes to see if one or the other will work, and then stick with that process. As to hormonal activity, usually once the body has returned to its normal rhythm, you will again be able to perm your hair. It can take as long as 2 years after the birth of a child before the hair returns to its prior state, but sometimes it never does. The joy of motherhood, but a small price to pay for the wonderful new addition to your life.

If you are one of those rare people who's hair simply will not hold a perm due to your unique hair structure, you may want to consider hair coloring instead. Coloring hair alters the texture just enough to help give the illusion of volume.

TIP: To insure healthy hair growth, take an inexpensive daily multiple vitamin such as Centrum or Flintstones.

My daughter is 13. Medication and pregnancy are not issues. My question was whether it was a styling issue - combing it out after her shower, shouldn't it have still looked permed instead of straight? - or do I need to take her back to the stylist to have her hair repermed?
