My dogs hair is shedding and it is winter; is this a healthy routine or a sign of illness?

Answer

Shedding in winter is not unusual for animals. Animals usually start to grow their summer coats when the days start getting longer (after the winter solstice), and start growing their winter coats when the days start getting shorter (summer solstice). Growing the summer coat usually means that the dead winter coat has to come out so you will see some shedding.
However, when animals start to lose unusually large amounts of hair it is a good idea to have a vet check up to rule out any underlying issues or diseases.
