I have a Sony KP-46C36 rear projection TV that I bought new

I have a Sony KP-46C36 rear projection TV that I bought new in 1997 or 1998. It had a great picture but lately I've noticed the picture is not nearly as sharp and bright as it has been. After reading some Q&A's in this site, I've done a hard reset, adjusted the convergence,     and went into diagnostic mode & pressed 8 to go back to factory settings. Nothing seems to help. Any thoughts? Sid

The picture tubes on rear projection TVs will age and will lose a certain percentage of brightness over several years especially if the set wasn't calibrated early on.

A correctly calibrated set will have the brightness and contrast settings well below 50%. This will lengthen the life of the tubes.

Your set will have a manual focus. I'm not sure where it is on the Sony but would assume that it is behind the front panel below the screen, in near the tubes. You would be looking for a series of knobs.

You would need a set of three colored overlays, red green and blue so that you can focus each tube. Or you can just try an eyeball it.

I suggest that you purchase the AVIA guide to home theater which is a DVD with hundreds of test patterns and calibrations on it. There are several at an time on Ebay.

Also you should try and get a manual for your TV. There is one here for $20. It will better explain the focusing procedure: http://getmanual.com/index.php?nav=showchassisitems&chassis=RA-2&brand=SONY

Thanks very much and good luck.
