Question

My 2003 Matrix X XXXXX XXXXX has had my toyota dealer tell me that the viscous coupler is shot and needs replacement after only 85000 miles. Since the unit did work (I tested it on icy conditions and I know the rear wheels do activate, is this the only way to rid myself of the annoying "whine" we hear at all speeds? Judging from what I have read in various 'problem' chat groups, the problem may be the two bearings for the coupler or the rear differential. Since I am on the hook for $2500 for the coupler (the techs 'seem' to think this is the only problem), just how much may I potentially have to spend to get this vehicle whole again? I would like to get somebody else to give me an opinion before the coupler comes in - if anything else is potentially required, I may have to spend as much as the car is worth (blue book) to fix this car up!!! Thank you very much for any help you can give.

Just gone to the dealer. Had one rear wheel bearing replaced and got rid of one whine, only to have the new whine become more noticable.

Accepted Answer

These rear ends are actually made by GM on this car. The corolla/matrix and GM vibe are from the same plant so there is a mixture of toyota/GM parts on these cars. The AWD system on this car is the same as used on several GM cars and is known to go bad. Yes the unit you were priced needs to be replaced as the deaer stated. I would request a detailed estimate if you would like me to review the complete charges.
