Answer

Hi Martin. Thanks for your question. Procrastination, as you know, can be very debilitating. You're not getting thing done that you need to, and you end up feeing bad about yourself. Fortunately, fears like this can be fairly easily dealt with through cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT teaches you to think differently, which causes a change in feelings. It has been proven to be very effective with changing self-destructive behaviors. I have found that, instead of trying to figure out why you procrastinate, it is more effective to examine your erroneous thinking about things - such as your fear of bad things happening. So, I would suggest you try to find a CBT therapist who can help you learn to change how you look at things. You could also get some books on the subject and try reading those - but I think you would have more success with therapy.

Best wishes, and please let me know if I can answer any further questions. Tamara

Hi Tamara, Thank you very much for your answer. Since I live in Sweden, where therapist time is extremely expensive and waiting times are very long, I'd like to give it a shot by reading up on it first. Any specific books you'd like to recommend? Thanks. /Martin

Hi Martin. I'm glad to help. Here's some that I would recommend to give you a good idea of how CBT works, and gives you the opportunity to examine your own thinking patterns. You should be able find them through an online bookstore.

The Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Anxiety: A Step-by-Step Program by William J. Knaus
Thoughts & Feelings: Taking Control of Your Moods and Your Life (Workbook) by Matthew McKay, XXXXXX XXXXX, and Patrick Fanning
Mind Over Mood: Change How You Feel by Changing the Way You Think by XXXXXX XXXXXberger and Christine Padesky

Good luck with everything. I think you will find these helpful! Take care. Tamara
