Question

14 week old son developed bad rash on face, neck, behind knees, chest, ears. When born was fine, few weeks later developed dry skin baby acne. Just started getting really bad now and skin leaks and is scabbing. Went to doctor and said it looks like bad cradle cap. Wondering if it could be the formula. In the hospital they gave me Enfamil A+ but he had a hard time pooping. Changed to Good Start and he now poops good but it is green. Not sure if this is an allergic reaction or what. In the last month he has been getting very gassy after a bottle.

Already Tried:
Have tried vaseline for the dry skin. Worked a bit. Went out of town for a few days. Skin seemed to be okay but dry. Came home and skin started getting extremely worse. Have been using Aveeno Baby Oatmeal bath and Aveeno cream cleanser that is unscented and also Aveeno baby cream that is also unscented and hypoallergenic. The doctor I saw yesterday said it looked like a bad case of seborrheic dermatitis. He has persribed a cream which we are waiting for. We live in a remote fly in community so they have to order it in from a pharmacy.

It sounds like he might have eczema and the seborrhea on the scalp actually is a part of this rash. You might see if you can find some CeraVe lotion or cream (available at Walgreen and CVS pharmacies here) as it is better than Aveeno. The prescription cream is probably a mild steroid cream so that will help alot.

As to the formula, I would not keep switching as each time it upsets his system and it can take 2 weeks to get used to the new formula. Most any formula is fine if you just stick with it as lactose intolerance is not present in newborns (breastmilk has lactose) and babies tolerate it fine. All babies go through a period of slowing of bowel movements at 6-8 weeks and it gets better in spite of whatever we do by 4 months of age!

Good luck and I know it is a problem living remote like you do. The internet comes in handy though, especially with a site like this one.
