Question

At first it seemed the thermostat was not working and I replaced it but did not solve the problem. The fan would start running when the air conditioner cycled on but you could hear the air conditioner keep trying to cycle and the fan would not go off unless I cut power to it. Now that it's time to turn the heat on there is no response at all. Its a Janetrol unit.

Answer

Here is what you can do,

On the furnace their is a circuit board in the blower section, you can try to get to that and jumper the R terminal to the W terminal that will simulate what the thermostat does but we are eliminating the wiring and the thermostat from the equation. If the vent motor starts then its wiring /stat problem. If it doesn't then either the vent motor or the circuit board has failed, let me know what happens. ( you have to push the door safety switch in to test this )

Thanks

Thank you for your help and patience.

I am so sorry, is there a time tomorrow I can get back with you? We have our 13 month old grandson (he came in after I started my query) and my husband needs tools from his shop, I am in a wheelchair and unable to attend our grandson while he goes out to get them. Our grandson will go to sleep for the evening shortly and he will be more able to work on it then. Rosalyn

Answer

Hi,

OK then we need to see if the same thing happens when the thermostat is set to heat, if not then its a thermostat or wiring problem, let me know.

Thanks

With the thermostat set on heat and automatic and above 85° the only thing that happens is a red light in the lower left hand corner of the circuit board lights.

Answer

Hi,

OK, I would say you have more than one problem, the thermostat should just duplicate what the jumper did, which was start the vent motor. The other problem is that once the vent motor starts the ignition sequence should continue on to lighting off the main burner. If you leave the jumper on will the heat start ?

Next thing you want to do is remove the front of the thermostat and jump the R and W there, let me know.

Thanks

Hi,

OK seems like the thermostat is the problem again. What brand and model is it ?

When the problems started we replaced the existing thermostat (which we threw away just yesterday) with a Honeywell CT87N. That was about a month ago but the weather has not required heat or air until now.

There is an RC terminal that is jumpered to the R terminal and an unused B terminal.

Hi,

Yeah, it should have worked. Looks like you are going to need to replace it and send it in for warranty.

Thanks
