Question

My cat had a few very short dizzy spells so I took him to the vet. A blood test came back that indicated that Caesar tested positive for toxiplasmosis. I had the medicine compounded in a liquid that is fish flavored. I tried to give Caesar the medicine in hs mouth with a syringe and he went nuts. Plan b was to give it to him in his food. He didn't eat it but his brother did. I plan to leave tomorrow for a three week trip and have a cat sitter. Any ideas on how I can get him to take the medicine. He looks great, am I takin a big chance if I don't medicate him until I get home? The cat sitter can isolate him so he will be the only one to get the food. p.s. If you can tell me the best way to make sure he gets the medicine I will postpone my trip until Thursday. Thank you.

Answer

Toxoplasmosis is a very serious infection, and treatment SHOULD NOT be delayed for your cat. Here is an informational sheet for you to read more about it.

I highly recommend trying to get the medication directly into his mouth. If he is having trouble with the liquid, you can try the capsules. The capsules can be pilled directly, or hidden in a treat called Pill Pockets that you can purchase from your vet.

My concern with hiding the liquid in his food is if he does not ingest the entire dose. If you want to try it this evening, I would separate the cats for feeding, and first offer the medication in a small amount of his favorite canned food. Ideally, he'll like the bowl clean before you give him the rest of his regular meal. If it goes smoothly, this could be a fine way to medicate him.

My last suggestion is asking a technician at your vet hospital to come to the house and medicate your cat until you return. He really cannot wait 3 weeks until you get home!

I am 20 miles from the vet so probalby won't be able to get a tech.I think I will postpone my departure until the 19th and see if I can get him to take the medicaton. I will try to isolate him without dry fod and see if he will eat the treated food. My cat sitter is a fellow cat lover and will come twice a day so if isolation works she can try that. Caesar looks so good and is very perky it is hard to believe he is infected. He hasn't been outsied since he was a kitten so I am stumped as to where he contracted the disease.

Good plan, I hope the isolation works. I don't think we'll ever know for sure when he was infected!!
