Info Request

Do you have symptoms from your hiatal hernia such as heartburn or regurgitation? How was this diagnosis made, by x-ray or endoscopy?

sorry for the tardy reply

I have had GERDfor years and 2 months ago had both upper and lower scope test.

The esophigus ring was hardened from the years of GERD and the DR fragimented this the best he could. Because of my years and health he does not suggest and will not fix the hiatal hernia I also have. The best I can remember I have a 'sliding type' of hernia. I take MYLAN 6150 and have taken most of the other perscription meds for GERD. I was taking 20mg but was still having problems and they upped that to 40mg but my insurance wouldn't cover the larger dose. So the Dr gave me enough pills to cover my taking (2) 20mg when needed. I have read more on WebMD and found that my nausia and gas could be as a result of the medication for the GERD, is this correct??? If so is there a medication that I could take in conjunction with the GERD med as to lessen the nausia????????

please excuse my spelling of the medical terms...

Thanks,

Mickey Varney

Your medication can cause the nausea at double dose. Were you tested for Barrett's.

Answer

Although I am sure you have tried some of the following suggestions try to do them all together until you see your doctor in January. Eat bland foods. Avoid spicey foods, fatty foods, citrus fruits, tomato juice or sauce, chocolates, alcohol and carbonated drinks, coffee (also decaf) and any food that specifically causes you discomfort. You should also stop smoking. You should not eat anything 2 hours before bedtime. The head of the bed should be raised 6-8 inches (can use large cans with sand). Try sleeping with left side down if you have nighttime reflux. Don't lie down for 2-3 hours after a meal. Some medications may make the reflux worse, including anti-cholinergics, NSAIDS, antibiotics, anti-depressants, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers, iron, potassium, sedatives and bronchodilators. Several non-prescription agents may help; Gaviscon, Mylanta or Maalox as directed on bottle, acid suppressing agents such as OTC Tagamet, Zantac, Pepcid, or Axid or the stronger agents such as Prilosec or Nexium, Prevacid and Protonix. Again follow instruction on the labels. Your Doctor may want to double your dose if you fail to improve. (already done in your case) It is important to loose weight if you or overweight. This has been clearly associated with worsening of reflux disease. If you do not improve on the above regimen or if you have trouble swallowing or pain upon swallowing your doctor may want to proceed with other tests such as endoscopy or pH monitoring. I have tried most of the things you mentioned. I don't smoke, I am a little underweight.I don't eat close to bedtime and have cut out a lot of things I used to eat, some a few weeks ago. One of my biggest problems is nausea that last for hours. Can you tell me something I can take for nausea that does not make me sleepy either from my doctlr or over the counter.

Answer

Try using another PPI like Nexium double dose to see if the nausea improves.Any anti-nausea medicine should be prescribed by your doctor. Compazine can be used OTC but only for two days. ******Click "ACCEPT" (GREEN) or I do not get credit for my answer and Just Answer holds your deposit. My doctor did an endoscopy. Until this was done I did not know I had a hernia.

Answer

I made the suggestion that your medicine may be causing the nausea and to try another med. That is my answer. ******Click "ACCEPT" (GREEN) or I do not get credit for my answer and Just Answer holds your deposit. Take a moment to leave a POSITIVE feedback which does not cost you anything. If theomeprazole DD 40 mg. is too strong would 20 mg a day still make me nauseas? If so could you suggest something better. Is there any medicine to help heal the hernia?

Answer

Dear m309,

Just nosing in. Your doctor has given you good advice for reflux. However, my question is about your "nausea". Folks with chronic reflux do not describe their symptom by the term nausea. Usually it is discomfort in the epigastrium, not nausea for hours. You have also been on very good meds for reflux issues.

So, I wonder if your nausea may be due to something else entirely. Other possibilities could include gall bladder dysfunction, delayed gastric emptying, bile acid reflux back into the stomach from the small intestine, pancreatic disease, etc. I really think you should request to see a gastroenterologist as something just does not add up here. Sorry I could not give you a simple answer to your frustrating concern.
