Question

My cat is about 12 yrs. He is sneezing and his eyes are watering and scratches his ears a bit. He eats his dry food but is not crazy for the wet food. He also goes to the bathroom regularly. He sleeps a lot more but still has great agility. He can often jump to the highest peak of the room which is about 2 feet at a time. He and my younger cat, who's about 3 yrs old have both been vaccinated regularly and are up to date with shots since they were kittens. They are both indoor cats. I'm a little worried, Cat Mommy

Info Request

Hello. Thanks for writing in. Is there any discharge from the nose? If so, please describe it. Is the discharge from the eyes just watery, or it is thicker and has more color?

There was a little tiny bit of discharge from his nose yesterday, a little cloudy but not today. The discharge from his eyes is a little thick and yellowish like mucus. It is not so president today and he has not sneezed much today. Not as much as yesterday.

Answer

Thanks for the information. It is possible that he may have contracted an upper respiratory infection. It could even be sinusitis. With the ear problems, though, I would be thinking about a nasopharyngeal polyp as well. He may just have a concurrent ear infection, but an ear exam may help to distinguish. Sometimes you have to sedate and retract the soft palate in the mouth to see the polyp. A polyp doesn't usually show any eye signs, though, so I may lean towards an upper respiratory infection. I would have your vet check him out tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I was kind of thinking about a respiratory infection because he didn't sneeze as often after the steam bath and he and my other cat have had ear mites before. He is eatting hard food, his treats and drinking water and his nose running is clearing . I will take him in to the vet firtst thing tomorrow. My cats are my children and when they feel bad so do I. I thank you again for your help, I will rest a little easier tonight.

You are very welcome. Glad I could help. Use the steam bath again if the sneezing starts again. Ear mites might not be the problem, but a bacterial or yeast infection in the ear could be. Good luck!
