Question

Hi my 9 year old Lhasa Apso a couple a weeks ago started acting like his ears hurt so we took him to our Vet. He said that the ears did'nt look to bad and gave us an ear cleanser Epi-Otic and a ear drop Mometamax. We took him back to the Vet. because we notice that he could not hear, he does not hear us call him, if he is sleeping it's hard to wake him unless we touch him. As of today I think he is totally deaf. My Vet says there's nothing we can do for him. There has to be something that we can do.

Hi XXXXXXXXXXX,

I'm sorry to hear that your dog is having this issue.

I have a couple of questions for you. Did your vet mention whether or not he could see the ear drums?

Is your dog tilting his head at all?

When you say that yourd was acting like his ears hurt do you mean he was scratching at them or shaking his head?

How long have you been using the Mometamax? Are you still using it?

The vet does not want us to use it anymore it was only for 3 days and the wash is about once a week. Scruffy was doing both scratching and shaking his head. He still is shaking his head some. The Vet just said everything looked fine. Just a little yeast. We did vacation in the NC mountains in Aug. and we had to stop at one point because of the presure on our ears and Scruffy was also crying at that time. Then he seem better, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. He seem ok when we got back home. He did have a grooming a few days before he started the signs of the ear problem.

Well, I'm not sure if the Mometamax caused the problem but it is suspicious. It is a drug that can cause deafness if the ear drum is ruptured. That's why I was wondering if your vet mentioned if the ear drums were intact or not when he examined the ears. I won't use that specific ear medication if I can't see the eardrums because of that fact. Whether or not the pressure in the mountains caused the ear drum(s) to rupture I don't know. But here is my hypothesis as to what might have happened: The eardrum(s) ruptured in the mountains. At the grooming maybe some water got in the ears causing the yeast infection. The Mometamax was placed into the ears to treat the yeast but the ear drums were ruptured and the Mometamax caused the deafness. That is what I think happened. Unfortunately if the Mometamax caused the deafness it is permanent. There really isn't anything you can do. There is a hearing test that can be done called BAER testing. Not all vet clinics have it but if you can find one that does you can have his hearing testing so you will know for sure if he has any hearing. It sounds like he is deaf though to me, based on what you have said. I'm sorry this happened. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Dr. Hinson
