Question

Age 77 years. Take 2mg Warfarin/day. 6 Cocodamols/day. 2 Celocoxib/day. Unable to run. Have been going to the gym for 2 years. Recently have been using the treadmill for 2 exercises for the legs: 1). Nil gradient, 8kph, try to complete 8 minutes 2). 15% gradient, 6.2 kph, try to do a minimum of 1.5 minutes. Recently holidays have interfered with the exercise training. Recently Nil gradient, 8kph, could just do 1.5 minutes. There was a pain along the underside of the left thigh muscle. Next visit much the same. Third visit decided to push through the pain, but there was a sudden very sharp pain, like a knife, ubder the thigh muscle. Was OK for a couple of days, but yesterday the thigh was swollen and tense underneath. Today the entire thigh is swollen and tense. Possibly below the knee there is swelling. Yesterday the Doctor prescrbed a heat rub. No discernable effect.

Accepted Answer

Hello,

THanks for the clarification.

The Problem looks like there is a tear to the hamstring and the adductor group of muscles of the thigh.

It is usually associated with swelling and pain. But the risk factor here is the warfarin intake which makes bleeding within the body more easy and harder to clot. When there is a muscle tear there is going to be some blood loss but it may be more in your case because of the warfarin. But it doesn't seem to be too much as there are no signs of big blood loss. The treatment of such tears is test hot fomentation and pain killers. If the swelling increase or signs of blood loss appear or there is fever stop warfarin immediately and see your doctor as soon as possible.

You can continue celcoxib and cocodamol.Time and rest will gradually heal the tear.

I hope this helps you
