Hello and thank you for the question.
I would love to help but I need some additional information to better assist you.
Is he on heartworm prevention?
Has he been vaccinated for kennel cough?
Is he exposed to other dogs at the groomer, dog park, or boarding?
How long has this been happening?
Ok.
It sound as if you boy may have contracted kennel cough possible from the groomers.
If you take your fur baby to the dog park or groomers it is recommended that they be vaccinated for kennel cough every 6 months.
Kennel cough" is an infectious bronchitis that is most often treated with antibiotic to prevent this from progressing to pneumonia.
I would recommend having you baby seen by the vet before the weekend or you may end up incuring a large emergency bill if he gets worse.
This is can be very contagious to other dogs so I would keep him home until he has recovered.
I hope this has been helpful, please feel free to reply back if I can be of further assistance.

How can it be an infection if the phelm is clear and it only happens at night and in the morning?
Kennel cough will not always change the color of the phelm, and just like in humans the cough seems to be worse as they settle down for the evening and again in the morning when they will cough up what has collected in the chest over night.
The incubation period for kennel cough is 2-7 days which would fit perfect with his trip to the groomers.
