Question

My male long-haired dachshund is 13 years old and never soiled the house in many, many years. Now, all of a sudden, he drinks water for a while, then comes into the living room and urinates on the carpet. He does not go on the linoleum. He'll do it right in front of us, too. Then he'll walk away from the area. My husband has been taking him out five times a day and there has never been any problem. And he always went to the front door and whined when he had to go out. But that has stopped. Can this be a bladder infection? Or can he be doing it for spite? The other day I was in the shower before going to work in the morning, and he urinated right outside the bathroom door. Help!

Answer

Hello,

This sounds like a infection, I suspect a UTI (Urinary Track Infection) It may also be caused by infection, mineral sediment in the urine, or bladder stones that may be lodged. Not only are urinary disorders life threatening to your dog, they are also very painful! While it could be incontinence I suspect a infection, I would rule out behavior based on his age and this coming on suddenly.

It is imperative that you get your dog to the vet as soon as you can. These infections do get worse without treatment and can cause some serious complications including death if not treated. Your vet will want to get a urine sample, and set your dog up on some antibiotics. If you can collect the urine sample yourself then the cost is far less. Use a bowel under your dog when urinating and then pour into a sealed Ziploc baggie or a bowel with a lid. If you have trouble your vet can collect it instead.

Walter, thanks for the answer. I forgot to tell you that he feels ill about every other day and doesn't eat much for most of the day. And I hear his stomach growling tremendously, like powerful stomach rolling noises. Then the next day he is fine.

Answer

Hello,

It sounds like infection, which can cause lack of appetite and stomach upset such as you are hearing. Of course it could also be a underlying condition such as diabetes. Either way I would have a urine test run and a complete blood panel to rule out any other problems. At his age it is always good to have a blood test every year to catch any problems before they become dangerous.

The strange thing is he just had blood work done in September, and the vet said he was fine and excellent for his age.

Answer

Hello,

Its wonderful that blood work was done in September, sounds like your vet is on the ball and prepared to watch out for conditions that like to suddenly appear at this age. Though we also know that while his test may have been great, sometimes these conditions can come on suddenly. I do suspect it is a simple UTI (Urinary Track Infection) so what I would suggest since he just had blood work done is to do the Urine test first, and if there is no infection present then move on to the blood test. I suspect that no blood test will be needed as this is likely the UTI.
