Question

My dog has had an ongoing flea allergy problem. She was back at the vet this week and started a cource of medicine to treat a secondary bacterial infection and yeast infection. They put her on antiboiotics, a anihistomine, something to treat the yeat infection and a new oral version of flea control. Today she developed red bumps on her abdomen and inside of her legs with pus. Is this a reaction to the pills or another problem?

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXXXX~

It's hard to say what is causing the rash your dog now has. It could be a delayed reaction to the flea bites...or it could be caused by the medication that she's on. The biggest (and most frustrating) problem with starting medications is that you never quite know which ones are going to cause a bigger problem than you started with.

I think for tonight, you should continue with the medication doses that your vet prescribed. If she seems uncomfortable and itchy, you could try soaking her in a baking soda bath. Adding 1 cup of baking soda to a tub of warm water and then soaking 30-60 minutes. Take dog out and let them air dry (this works best if done outside or in an area where there isn't carpeting as wet dogs drip...a lot). Local itches can be covered with a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water.

Tomorrow, first thing in the morning, I would absolutely call your vet and let them know what's going on. They may want to suggest a medication switch to try to get the rash under control.

I hope this helps!

will baking powder work?

Accepted Answer

No, it doesn't have the same calming effect as the soda.
