Question

my pitbull puppy has loss of hair around both of her eyes, the skin is red,and a bit scaley. She also has dandruff onb her back. It does not seem to be contagious as my older pit bull does not have any issues. What can it be. Also it does not seem to bother her. I do not see her scratch very often

Answer

Thanks for the question XXXXXXX .

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following, this sounds very like demodectic mange { Red mange } :

1. One of the cardinal signs of demodectic mange would be hair loss particularly round the eyes. A rash could be visible in the affected areas of skin as well.

2. In young dogs mild cases of demodectic mange will often resolve on their own without any treatment as the dog gets older. This is not a very contagious disease so it is possible your other dog will remain unaffected.

3. The odd demodex mite can sometimes be found on skin scrapings carried out on dogs which do not nor will ever develop clinical disease but diagnosis will usually rest on seeing the mites under the microscope following a skin scraping. This is a simple and easy test which your vet will be able to carry out.

4. Here is a link to an excellent web page which covers this disease in depth including treatment : LINK.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
